This piece was done for my Large-Format Digital Printing class. We visited the Lab of Entomology at my school and drew from the specimen collections. This insect in particular was a Pachyrrhynchus gemmatus - a species of weevil from the Philippines. I abstracted the drawing into a graffiti-like style, since that is my concentration in this class. The faint lettering spells out "Pachyrrhynchus gemmatus." The original drawings can be found here in my gallery.

After creating the original sketches, I scanned in my work and traced over it in Adobe Illustrator. I exported the final product at high resolution and split up the layers for print on large-format Epson printers. I have a base layer containing the background colors, and two overlayers containing the text and highlights, which I have burned onto photo-sensitive aluminum plates and will be printing in ink.

Opal is my birthstone, and the opals in this piece were taken from an image of an opal from Australia.

This image is a digital reproduction of the final product. If you would like to see an image of a real Pachyrrhynchus gemmatus, click here.

Thank you thank you :D I've been making litho prints of this for my large-format class, with mixed results... usually the alignment of the plates is off so it looks kinda sucky, but I wanna make a bunch and keep trying.
