This piece was done for my Large-Format Digital Printing class. We visited the Lab of Entomology at my school and drew from the specimen collections. This insect in particular was a Goliathus regius - one of the largest insects in the world. If you look closely, you can see the words "Goliathus regius" carved into the pattern on its back.

After creating the original sketches, I traced the design with carbon paper onto a block of wood. I spent several days carving out the white areas, then I printed with black ink onto newsprint. I scanned those prints into Photoshop and edited in the brown patterned background. I then printed those brown areas on a large-format Epson scanner, and used my woodblock to print the black areas again.

This image is a digital reproduction of the final product.
